A World of Tastes at the Markt des Guten Geschmacks 2016

A World of Tastes at the Markt des Guten Geschmacks 2016

Every year at the Messe (meaning fairgrounds), the Markt des Guten Geschmacks (the market of good tastes) comes to town. I've somehow missed it the last couple of years, and so even though we've had a really busy week having just come back from our vacation in Italy (a post on that is coming soon!), I decided that I just couldn't miss this event again.

The Markt des Guten Geschmacks is part of the Slow Food movement that began with Carlo Petrini in Italy in 1986. The group advocates for regional, sustainable, and artisanal foods, and local chapters organize events like this one all over the world. Germany's own chapter was founded in 1992, and they've since worked to promote the slow food philosophy at events around Germany...

Recipe: Japanese Onigiri from JustOneCookbook

Recipe: Japanese Onigiri from JustOneCookbook

One of the foods that I absolutely loved when we visited Japan was onigiri. I'd never eaten these little rice balls before our trip, but soon came to rely on them for a quick, filling breakfast in the morning or for a mid-afternoon snack. It seemed that every corner convenience store had them, and there were tons of different flavors.

When we returned to Stuttgart I tried to find onigiri. The closest I've come is Waraku in Düsseldorf. Taking a 3-hour journey every time I have an onigiri-craving hardly seems practical, so I decided to learn how to make my own...

Welcome to Travel Hungry

That's right, Traveling Hopefully is now Travel Hungry.

WHY THE CHANGE?

I never imagined I'd continue blogging for this long, but after two years, I still enjoy spending the time reflecting on and sharing the great meals that I've had at home and abroad. Now that my blog is a bit more mature, the old name and style just didn't seem to fit with what I felt my blog had come to be about. I want the new site to better reflect what I blog for and about: great food in Stuttgart and beyond.

WHAT HAS CHANGED?

You'll notice that the name isn't the only new feature. I've updated my blog's style to make the layout a bit more eye-catching. I've also commissioned my very talented husband to create a new logo for me that I hope will better define my name.

WHAT'S NEW?

Apart from blogging about my outings to local restaurants and food-focused travels, I'm also going to start blogging about some of the more successful recipes that I make at home. Food is a big part of my life, and I actually spend more time cooking at home than eating out. A lot of what I make are recipes from the places that I've lived and traveled to that I just can't find in the local restaurants. I'll be sharing those recipes, along with any tips, for you to enjoy.

I'm traveling hungry and looking forward to the journey to come!

A Swabian Cooking Class at Straub's Krone

A Swabian Cooking Class at Straub's Krone

When I read Ami im Schwabenland's blog post about her cooking class with pumpkin back in October, I thought that it sounded like something I'd really enjoy (especially because pumpkin is one of my favorite flavors!). I've only ever done a cooking class while traveling, but haven't yet participated in one "at home". To my delight, soon after that blog post Ami im Schwabenland invited both me and the blogger behind Kaffee und Kuchen to join her for their next class. After a few emails back and forth, we finally decided on last Saturday for our date...

Homemade Pasta and Wood-fired Pizza at Il Pomodoro

Homemade Pasta and Wood-fired Pizza at Il Pomodoro

I really like holidays for being markers of the season, though I have to admit that Valentine's Day has never been one that I've much cared for. Sure, it's nice to show your loved one that you care, but I'm not too keen on fighting for a dinner reservation just to say "I love you." So because Matt was flying out last weekend on Valentine's Day, I was just as pleased to dine out the Saturday before and call it a date. As we're in the process of booking a spring trip to Tuscany, we've had Italian food on our minds and decided to try Il Pomodoro over in the Wilhelmsplatz...

Fresh and Tasty Sushi at Origami

Fresh and Tasty Sushi at Origami

I don't often get the opportunity to go out for lunch, and so today when Matt and I had a rare Friday off together, we decided to make the most of it by trying Origami, a local sushi restaurant that's been on our list for some time.

I love sushi, but I find that we eat the cute, tiny fish-topped rice rectangles less often here than we did in the States. I'm pretty sure the reason has something to do with Stuttgart being quite far from any major body of ocean water. Of the 3-4 sushi restaurants we've tried in the city, the quality has either been very good and expensive or abysmal (think tasteless, fried frozen, or worse -- fishy!) and less expensive. Despite my past disappointments, I'd heard good things about Origami from from friends and colleagues, and was looking forward to our meal there...

Stuttgart's New Chinese Buffet at New Shanghai Restaurant

Stuttgart's New Chinese Buffet at New Shanghai Restaurant

It could be because I'm American that I have a special place on my culinary palate for Chinese buffets. I remember going to one when my husband and I first started dating because we were young and didn't have much money; our local Chinese buffet located in one of America's never-ending strip malls was one of our few choices for a filling meal on a dime. Maybe it's that nostalgia or maybe it's the novelty of finding one in Stuttgart that influenced us to check out New Shanghai Restaurant today for lunch...

The Burger Hunt Continues at Triple B -- Beef Burger Brothers

The Burger Hunt Continues at Triple B -- Beef Burger Brothers

I swear I've been living here for almost four years, but somehow Heilige Drei Könige (translation: Three King's Day or Epiphany) caught me off guard. Here in Baden-Württemberg it's a federal holiday, meaning that everything (i.e. the grocery store) is closed on that day. And because we've been shopping daily for our meals since we moved to Germany, that meant that on Wednesday we were left without food in our tiny apartment fridge for dinner. Our solution? Look at our "Restaurants to Try" list, of course. And what piqued our interest the most? Burgers from Triple B -- Beef Burger Brothers...
